Shell Energy Ended Texas Home Plans in 2025
Shell Energy no longer sells residential electricity in Texas. On March 4, 2025, Shell Energy Solutions announced it would cease residential retail electric sales in the state, and NRG acquired its remaining Texas residential customer book. Shell continues to serve non-residential customers in Texas, but if you are a homeowner or renter looking for a Shell Energy home electricity plan, there is nothing to enroll in.
This page explains what changed, what it meant for former Shell residential customers, and which active Texas providers to compare instead.

What Changed in March 2025
Shell Energy was the retail electricity brand of Shell Energy North America, a subsidiary of Shell plc. It competed in the Texas ERCOT residential market alongside the other major retail electric providers.
On March 4, 2025, it was announced that Shell Energy Solutions would stop selling residential retail electricity in Texas and that NRG Energy would acquire the remaining Texas residential customer book. Shell said at the time that it would maintain its offerings and service to non-residential electric customers in the state. Transaction terms and customer counts were not disclosed publicly.
The practical effect for households is simple: Shell Energy is not an option when you shop residential plans in Texas today.
If You Were a Shell Energy Residential Customer
Your account moved to NRG as part of that transaction. Whether you are still on the terms you originally signed depends on how long ago your Shell contract was due to expire:
- Your original term has since ended and you signed something new. Check the expiration date on your current contract so you are not caught by an automatic rollover.
- Your term ended and you did nothing. You are likely on a holdover, month-to-month or variable product. These are typically well above the rate you can get by shopping, and variable rates can move from month to month.
Pull up your latest bill. It will show which retail provider serves you now and the rate you are actually paying per kWh — those two numbers tell you whether it is worth switching.
What to Do Now
- Confirm your current provider and rate from your bill rather than from memory. Brand transitions like this one happen without much customer-facing noise.
- Shop against your real usage. Advertised rates are quoted at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh. If your home runs at 1,400 kWh a month, the headline number may not reflect what you would actually pay — especially on bill-credit plans, where the credit only applies inside a specific usage band.
- Read the Electricity Facts Label. The EFL discloses the early termination fee, base charge, renewable content, and average price at each usage tier. Every Texas REP must publish one for every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shell Energy

Who took over Shell Energy’s Texas residential customers?
NRG Energy acquired the remaining Texas residential customer book as part of the same announcement.
Does Shell Energy still operate in Texas at all?

What happened to my Shell Energy contract?
Residential accounts transferred to NRG. Check your current bill for the provider name, your rate per kWh, and your contract end date, since any original Shell term has likely expired by now.

Both were part of Shell plc, but the retail electricity business and the fuel retail business are separate operations. The Texas residential electricity exit does not affect Shell fuel stations.
